The activities of the department are focused on the research and development of polymeric composites and nanocomposites, polymeric blends and polymeric surfaces. In the field of polymeric composites and nanocomposites, the main attention is paid to the electrically conductive composites on the base of carbon filler for the advanced applications such as electrochemical sensors and active photoactuators. Highly thermally conductive composites filled with graphite also represent a very important group of the studied materials.

In the field of polymeric blends, the Phase Change Materials on the base of various polymers and paraffin waxes are investigated. A significant attention is paid to the biodegradable plastics with the aim to modify their physical properties through blending with the convenient components.

Other important topic of the department is the study of surface properties of polymeric films, fibers and fabrics. The research is focused on the new surface treatment of polymeric surfaces including both physical modifications, such as the plasma discharge and special chemical treatment with the aim to improve various surface properties such as polarity, conductivity or antibacterial effect. A special effort deals with the sol-gel chemistry and technology of organofunctionl silanes. The key method for the characterization of the surface modifications is XPS.

Last but not least, an effort of the department is also oriented on the development of new grades of special adhesives, especially electrically conductive ones.
